The Polytechnic Peter-the-Great-University of Saint Petersburg ( Russian Санкт-Петербургский политехнический университет Петра Великого , literally St. Petersburg Polytechnic University named Peter the Great , shortly СПбПУ / SPbPU ) is one of the oldest technical universities in St. Petersburg and is one of the most prestigious technical universities in Russia . Until 1990 it was called the Polytechnic Institute . Since the 1920s it was named after М. Kalinin , MI Kalinin Polytechnic Institute in Leningrad . After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it was named the State [Poly] Technical University of Saint Petersburg. It has had its current name since February 2015. There are over 28,000 students today (including over 2,500 international students).
history
Significant influence on the establishment of the St. Petersburg State Polytechnic Institute " Peter the Great " (Russian Политехнический Институт императора Петра Великого ) in 1899 had the Russian statesman Sergei Witte , who saw the industrialization of Russia as an important prerequisite for him . The first class of students was enrolled on October 1, 1902. The facility initially consisted of the four faculties of economics , shipbuilding , electromechanics and metallurgy .
