National Technical Museum in Prague
The National Technical Museum in Prague (Czech Národní technické muzeum v Praze , NTM ) is the largest institution in the Czech Republic that deals with the preservation of information and artifacts in the technical and technological field. Its current location has been not far from Letná Park since 1941 .
history
The museum in the Czech capital Prague was founded in 1908 and thus before the Technical Museum Vienna in the then imperial capital. On September 28, 1910, the first exhibition was ceremoniously opened in Palais Schwarzenberg .
In 2009 and 2010 the museum was closed for renovation work. The reopening was in March 2011.
Collections
The museum has an extensive collection, but the exhibits only make up 15% of the total holdings. The NTM also has archives, including around 3,500 feet of archival materials and around 250,000 books.
The two Renaissance sextants by Jost Bürgi and Erasmus Habermehl and the astronomical clock by Engelbert Seige, made around 1791, are among the national cultural monuments of the Czech Republic .
Railway Museum
Since 2001, some exhibits from the NTM railway collection have been shown in the Railway Museum Lužná u Rakovníka . Two particularly valuable exhibits in the railway collection are:
- Steam locomotive KLADNO of the Buschtěhrad Railway , built by the machine works of the State Railway Company with serial number 295 in 1855. It is one of only three Engerth-type steam locomotives that have survived worldwide. This type was created as a result of the Semmering competition of 1851 to get a suitable locomotive for the world's first mountain railway
- Komarek steam railcar ( kkStB 1.0 ). This last surviving steam powered rail car of the kk Austrian State Railways was refurbished in 2005 and is now in the Lužná u Rakovníka Railway Museum

In order to present the railway vehicles in a museum, a new museum is planned at the Praha Masarykovo nádraží station, which will also house the electrotechnical collections. The museum's holdings include over 150 railway vehicles, and a further 70 are planned to be included in the museum's holdings in the future. A large part has been stored in a museum depot at Chomutov train station since 2007 .
The plans for the new building at the location of the former locomotive workshops have been advanced since 2001, without the start of construction. The historic workshop building of the Northern State Railway from 1845 is to be integrated into the new building of an exhibition hall for 40 railway vehicles. The museum is scheduled to open in 2026.
