Ted Leonsis

Theodore John Leonsis (born January 8, 1957 in Brooklyn , New York) is an American entrepreneur and patron of Greek descent. He was also active as a politician and author. He was best known as an executive at America Online (AOL) and owner of Monumental Sports & Entertainment .

Leonsis was born in Brooklyn on January 8, 1957, to Greek immigrants. He first worked in his parents' grocery store and attended Brooklyn Technical High School and then Lowell High School which he graduated in 1973. He studied American studies at Georgetown University and came to computer science through working with punched cards. He worked as an intern for MP Paul Tsongas .

Professional background

Leonsis worked at Wang Laboratories as a corporate communications manager and at Harris Corp. as marketing manager. He then founded the computer magazine LIST with a partner and sold it to Thomson Reuters two years later . With the proceeds he founded Redgate Communications Corporation in 1987 and sold it to AOL whose employee he became and temporarily managed.

Leonsis turned to sports out of sponsorship and founded Monumental Sports & Entertainment , which owns numerous sports franchises including the Washington Capitals , Washington Wizards , Washington Mystics , Washington Valor and Baltimore Brigade . The company also owns the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.

From 2008 to 2020 he led the independent film production company SnagFilms , which produced critical films such as Super Size Me and Nanking .
