Teesdale was a district in County Durham in England . The administrative seat and by far the largest town was the town of Barnard Castle .

The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and resulted from the merger of the Urban District Castle Barnard and the Rural District Castle Barnard. The Rural District Startforth, which was also added, comprised the areas south of the River Tees and traditionally belonged to the North Riding of Yorkshire . On April 1, 2009, in addition to Teesdale, all Dictricts in County Durham were abolished as part of the administrative reform and merged into the Unitary Authority Durham .

Teesdale was the least populated of any common district in England. Only the City of London and the Isles of Scilly , both of which have special status, had even fewer inhabitants. Behind Eden in Cumbria Teesdale also had the lowest population density.

The flora of Teesdale is in Moorbank Garden of the University of Newcastle documented and preserved.
