Deportation Act (Ottoman Empire)
The Deportation Law or Tehcir Law ( Turkish Tehcir Kanunu ; officially "Provisional law on the measures to be taken by the military against persons who contravene the measures of the government in times of war") was a provisional passed on May 27, 1915 by the national parliament of the Ottoman Empire Law authorizing the deportation of the Armenian population. The resettlement campaign resulted in the deaths of 600,000 to 1,800,000 civilians and is commonly referred to as the Armenian Genocide . The law came into force with publication in the Official Gazette on June 1, 1915 (18th Rajab 1333 hiǧrī / May 19, 1331 rūmī ) and was valid until February 8, 1916.

The Deportation Law, commonly known as the Tehcir Law, was passed by the Ottoman Parliament, the forerunner of today's Turkish Grand National Assembly , as a provisional law entitled “Law Regarding Measures by the Military in Adversaries to Wartime Governance” . It was adopted by a majority of members of the Committee for Unity and Progress on May 27, 1915 , and came into effect on June 1 of the same year when it was published in the state newspaper Takvim-i Vekayi .
The law instructs the military to use military force to put down any resistance and gives the military the ability to deport residents of villages and towns suspected of treason or espionage.
