Teisutis (Joe) Zikaras (born July 5, 1922 in Panevėžys , Lithuania , † May 10, 1991 in Melbourne , Australia ) was a Lithuanian-Australian sculptor.

life and work

Zikaras attended the Kaunas Art Academy in Lithuania from 1942 to 1943 , the director of which was his father Juozas Zikaras since 1929. His father took his own life in November 1944. After the end of World War II , Zikaras spent two years training as a sculptor at a crafts school in Freiburg im Breisgau before emigrating to Australia; there he arrived in Melbourne in 1949. From 1952 to 1956 he assisted as a sculptor in the creation of the Melbourne War Memorial . He was a lecturer in sculpture at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a member of the Victorian Sculptor Society .

Center Five group

In 1961 there were meetings of the Center Five Group of sculptors , which Julius Kane organized and Zikaras was a founding member of. The Center 5 Group adopted a five-point plan that was presented during their meetings. This group of the Victorian Sculptors Society included Clifford Last , Inge King , Norma Redpath , Vincas Jomantas , Teisutis Zikaras, Julius Kane, and Lenton Parr . One of the five points of this plan was that the sculptors' contact with the public should be broadened and the understanding of art expanded. Another concern of this group was that group exhibitions of the sculptors should take place. When they left the Victorian Sculptors Society, their group exhibitions were viewed as competing events and this created a deep division of the local sculpting community. The first group exhibitions of this kind took place in 1963, 1964 and 1965. In 1974 and 1984 works by these sculptors were also presented as an exhibition by the Center Five group .
