Tekor basilica
The Church of Sankt Sarkis in Tekor ( Armenian Տեկորի տաճար , Turkish Aziz Sargis Kilisesi ), also known as the Tekor Basilica , was an Armenian church in historical Armenia , today in eastern Turkey , according to the dating of Josef Strzygowski . It was destroyed by earthquakes and built over by the city administration in the 1960s.
The Tekor basilica was located opposite the town of Digor in the province of Kars about 16 km west of the Armenian border. Tekor was a three-aisled longitudinal cross -domed church . It was almost completely destroyed by earthquakes in 1911 and 1935. Low remains of the wall were removed in the 1960s to build a town hall (also destroyed today). The inscriptions dating the building to the 480s were the oldest known Armenian inscriptions.
Until its destruction, the Tekor basilica was considered the oldest Armenian domed basilica.
