Vehicle types

Minibuses are often used for wheelchair transport in order to have enough space for several people as well as people in wheelchairs. For the sitting transport to passenger cars or minibuses are used. The stretcher transports are carried out - depending on the situation and needs - by ambulances or special vehicles from the patient transport service with the appropriate equipment.

Entry and safety devices

Handicapped transport vehicles sometimes have different facilities for receiving and securing disabled people.

For the independent entry of disabled people, additional steps can be built in to make it easier . Special ramps or lifting platforms can be carried by the vehicle or mounted on them to allow people to be taken in wheelchairs . To secure people with poor seating stability, seat belts can be installed on all seats and special wheelchair restraint systems can be installed for people who are transported in wheelchairs .

The wheelchairs must be secured for transport. There are special wheelchair restraint systems for this . The best known is the floor mounting, in which the wheelchair is attached to its power node at four points on the vehicle floor.

Other systems work with additionally built-in fixed backrest inserts for the wheelchair.
