Telemann works directory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Telemann Works Directory (TVWV and TWV) is the directory of the works of the composer Georg Philipp Telemann , which for reasons of publication history consists of two complementary sub-directories.

One directory is the Telemann Vocal Works Directory (TVWV), which was developed in its original form by the musicologist Werner Menke (1907–1993) in the years 1932–1942. Since publication was initially not possible in the war and post-war years, the first version only exists in the form of twenty typewritten volumes, of which a few and a. in the Johann Christian Senckenberg university library in Frankfurt am Main .

From 1960, the musicologist Martin Ruhnke compiled a catalog raisonné by Telemann on behalf of the Bärenreiter Verlag , which concentrated on the instrumental works. He chose the form of a directory organized thematically according to work groups based on the model of the Hoboken directory of Joseph Haydn's works . In 1965 an agreement was reached with Werner Menke, according to which he should publish the first part of the Telemann works directory. For this purpose, the vocal works, in contrast to Menke's original bibliography, were to be subdivided according to genre.

Since the originally planned publication schedule could not be adhered to, Werner Menke was finally no longer ready to publish his two volumes as part of the TWV of the Bärenreiter-Verlag, and published them separately in another publisher in 1982/83. The jointly agreed structuring principles were retained, however, so the TVWV (work groups 1–25) and the TWV (work groups 30–55) published in 1984–99 together form the complete list of Telemann's works with non-overlapping numbering.
