distribution
Remote-controlled robots are already widespread, especially in the military sector. Here they are also referred to as drones. In addition to reconnaissance, the area of application is wherever it is too dangerous for people to use it, especially in war zones or to defuse bombs. Telepresence robots have also increased in the private sector since the 2000s.
meaning
The head of the AI laboratory at MIT , Rodney Brooks is quoted in the online edition of the "Financial Times" as follows:
“The telepresence robots will fulfill our wishes at one thought. While we may be physically present in a certain place, we will be able to mentally project ourselves into a telepresence device and another place if we are authorized to do so. Everyone who doesn't have this technology will want it soon. "
Representation in the film
Newer science fiction films also take up the idea of telepresence robots more, whereas earlier the image of self-controlled, intelligent robots was conveyed. Examples are the titles Surrogates - My Second Self and Avatar - Departure to Pandora .
