The Tellaro , formerly also called Eloro or Heloros , is a river in the southeast of Sicily .

It rises at an altitude of about 840 meters on the slopes of the Erbesso mountain of the Monti Iblei in the municipality of Giarratana and flows downhill past the village of Palazzolo Acreide . For more than half of its course, the river forms the border between the Free Municipal Consortia Ragusa and Syracuse up to the point where the Tellesimo, the largest tributary of the Tellaro, flows into it. Other tributaries are Musca, Montesano and Gisira.

After a distance of 45 km, the Tellaro flows south of Marina di Noto into the Ionian Sea . In the area of the river mouth was the ancient place Eloro , which was founded by Corinthian colonists in the 7th century BC. And gave the river its name. Today the not yet fully excavated remains of the settlement form one of the most important archaeological sites in Sicily. The nature reserve Riserva naturale orientata Oasi faunistica di Vendicari lies south of the river mouth .
