A tank locomotive is a type of steam locomotive in which the water and fuel supplies are carried in containers on the locomotive itself.

Construction

The water supplies are mostly in side tanks or in the frame , which is designed as a water tank . The coal or fuel supplies are located in an extension container in front of or behind the driver's cab .

The alternative to the tank locomotive design is the locomotive with an attached tender . Tank locomotives were preferably used on short routes in order not to use unnecessary energy for the transport of supplies. Another advantage of most tank locomotives is that they run roughly equally well in both directions and therefore do not have to be turned at the end points of the line.

The disadvantage is that the frictional load and thus also the tensile force decrease as the supplies carried along are used up . Often, tank locomotives, such as the DB class 66 shown in the picture, were designed in such a way that the largest possible part of the supplies is arranged above the rear bogie , the relief of which has less of an influence on the pulling force. For this reason, bogies arranged behind the coupling wheels (i.e. axle sequences such as 1'C2 'and 1'D2') are more common on tank locomotives than on locomotives with tenders. This phenomenon was particularly pronounced with the Engerth locomotives .

Both small shunting locomotives and heavy machines for freight train operations , high-speed locomotives with streamlined cladding and machines with mallet engines were designed in tank locomotives.
