The Tepui drop ant shrike ( Thamnophilus insignis ) belongs to the genus Thamnophilus within the ant bird family (Thamnophilidae) .

The species occurs in Venezuela , the adjacent parts of Guyana and northern Brazil .

The distribution area includes tropical or subtropical moist mountain forest between 900 and 2000 m altitude.

The Latin additional species comes from the Latin insignis 'mark, distinction' .

features

The bird is about 16 to 17 cm tall and weighs between 22 and 30 g. The male is dark gray with black on the upper side and the vertex with single white feathers on the crest and nape, strong white spots or stripes on the back and wings. The tail is rimmed with white. The sides of the head are gray, as are the underside, feet and beak. The female is distinguished by a light brown cap.

Geographic variation

The following subspecies are recognized:

  • T. i. insignis Salvin & Godman , 1884, nominate form - southern Venezuela, western Guyana and northern Brazil
  • T. i. nigrofrontalis Phelps, Sr & Phelps, Jr. , 1947 - extreme southwest of Venezuela

voice

The singing is described as a series of the same tones that gets faster and faster, initially increasing in pitch, ending in a long, accentuated, higher nasal sound.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects and arthropods , which are sought alone or as a pair, usually 1 to 5 m above the ground, sometimes also at the top of the tree.

The breeding season is not known.

Hazardous situation

The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
