Collected Fiction is a jazz album by Ken Vandermark that documents duets with bassists Kent Kessler , Ingebrigt Håker Flaten , Nate McBride and Wilbert de Joode . The recordings, which were made in Chicago on February 4th and 5th, 2008, were released on Okkadisc Records in 2009 .

background

The initiator of these recordings was the Chicago musician Ken Vandermark, who played with three bassists he knew from his previous work. These were Kent Kessler, with whom Vandermark already worked in Hal Russell's NRG ensemble in the late 1980s. Like Kessler, Nate McBride is a Chicago musician and has worked with Vandermark in numerous groups. The career of the Norwegian Ingebrigt Haker Flaten is also intertwined with the saxophonist, who played with him in the bands Schooldays and Free Fall . The connection to the Dutch bass player Wilbert de Joode was new on this date; until the release of Ab Baars ' Trio with Ken Vandermark, Goofy June Bug (2008), there was no recording of the two musicians together.

reception

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival 2019

According to Mark Corroto, who reviewed the album on All About Jazz , the sound of the album has a live quality that reveals the emotions and physicality of the game. The author considers the physical effort of flattening to be particularly noteworthy; it cannot be ignored that he is vocalizing on “Curve I” or attacking his instrument on “Extension”. His playing, more in the tradition of the great European improvisers Joëlle Léandre and Peter Kowald , extends the sound of the bass beyond the traditional pulse . The same applies to Joode, who in the opening section of "Ellipse IV" scatters tones that sound as if the wheels of a train had rolled past an intersection. Together he and Vandermark created almost electronic sounds on "Contour III" before they followed up with a call and response improvisation.

Stef Gijssels wrote in the Free Jazz Blog that not only because of the variety of moods used and the different styles of the bassists, the approach to all these relatively short improvisations also differed considerably. Some are wild, some are bop-stressed, while others are very sensitive and reserved, which creates a kind of tenderness that is unusual for the normally muscular Vandermark. Although the pieces were improvised, they were rehearsed around certain thematic sounds and the best recording made it onto the record. The 22 tracks showed a variety of perspectives for the sax-bass duo and demonstrated not only the skills of the musicians, but also the breadth of the subgenres of modern jazz , the abundance of possibilities for improvisation using influences from the blues , swing to to bop and free jazz. With all the influences [of the musicians involved], Vandermark is often a determining element in the music and yet remains sufficiently variable to match the styles of the four bassists.
