Terence Higgins, Baron Higgins

Terence Langley "Terry" Higgins, Baron Higgins KBE DL PC (born January 18, 1928 in Lambeth , London ) is a former conservative British politician . He was also a silver medalist at the Commonwealth Games as a track and field athlete and participated in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki .

Higgins was MP in the House of Commons for the Worthing constituency from 1964 to 1979 , and Treasury Secretary of State from 1972 to 1974.

He served from 1946 to 1948 in the Royal Air Force and was a member of the British Olympic team in 1952. Over the 400 meters he was eliminated in the quarter-finals, with the 4-by-400-meter relay he reached the final, where the British ranked five occupied.

In 1993 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire . In 1997 he was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Higgins , of Worthing in the County of West Sussex, and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .

His wife, Dame Rosalyn Higgins , is a former President of the International Court of Justice .
