Teresa Mann

Doris Teresa Mann de Obarrio (born September 2, 1934 in Panama City ; † July 6, 2017 there ) was a Panamanian ballerina , ballet teacher and dance pioneer.

Career

Mann was the daughter of Henry Lindsay Mann, a Canadian banker of the Royal Bank of Canada , and the Panamanian Rosaura de Obarrio, who in turn was descended from the Panamanian architect Alberto de Obarrio. Shortly after she was born, the family moved to Caracas , where her father started working in the bank's branch there. A few years later the family moved to Lima before finally settling in Panama in 1946. Mann attended local ballet schools in both Lima and Caracas. She graduated from the "Maria Inmaculada International School" in Panama City in 1946. In the same year she began her studies at the newly founded "National Ballet School of Panama", but during this time she had already performed with the state ballet of Peru in Lima. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Holy Names College in Oakland , California .

From 1956 to 1961 she performed with the National Ballet of Canada and expanded her performances to Europe between 1961 and 1963, where she appeared with various companies. After returning to Panama in 1972 she co-founded the National Ballet there. Before that, in 1965 she formed the "Teresa Mann School of Dance" and in 1975 the "Teresa Mann Ballet".

Mann married Carlos Emilio Guevara Céspedes in 1964. She had three children with him.
