Teresa Margarida da Silva e Orta (* 1711 or 1712 in São Paulo , † 1792 in Lisbon ; pseudonym : Dorotéia Engrássia Tavareda Dalmira ) was a Brazilian writer from the time of the Enlightenment .

At the age of six she moved to Portugal with her parents , where she lived the rest of her life. Her most important writing is the Maximas de Virtude e Formosura published in Lisbon in 1752 , which were republished in 1777 under the title Aventuras de Diófanes . Based on François Fénelon's The Adventures of Telemach , it contains a critique of royal absolutism and advises the king to enlightened paternalism .

She is considered the first novelist in the Portuguese language .
