The long-distance trains of the Chilean Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado from Santiago de Chile to Chillán are called TerraSur .

The trains travel about 400 km and take 4 ½ hours. They stop in Rancagua , San Fernando , Curicó , Talca , San Javier , Linares , Parral , San Carlos . Mainly used vehicles of the type UTF-444, which were acquired from the Spanish RENFE , are used.

Operations began under this title in 2001. Currently 3–5 pairs of trains run per day. Under the title Expreso Maule, another pair of trains runs the section from Santiago to Linares. In places, the trains reach the maximum speed of 140 km / h for the vehicle type, making them one of the fastest passenger trains in South America.

The trains are manned by a large number of staff during the journey. Each of the three cars of the electric multiple units is looked after individually, plus conductors, cleaning and bistro staff.

After the earthquake of February 27, 2010 , the train service was stopped and one and a half years later it was resumed in full, but with a reduced number of trains.
