Coordinates: 19 ° 59 ′ 31 ″ S , 13 ° 2 ′ 13 ″ O Terrace Bay ( Afrikaans Terracebaai ) is anovernight campon the Skeleton Coast in Namibia , which is mainly visited by anglers. It is about 400 kilometers north of Swakopmund and 70 kilometers south of Möwebucht . It is named after the bay of the same name.
history
The "Terrace Bay" camp was built at the end of the 1960s as accommodation for the mine staff of the "Terrace Bay Diamond Mine" of the American-South African Scott Du Preez group. About six million rand were invested at that time . The diamond mine operated from 1969 to 1972 and then closed again due to unprofitability. The workforce consisted of around 185 employees. The camp and all outbuildings were once part of the Ben du Preez mining operations. When the company was declared bankrupt, the state inherited all the facilities.
In the southern part of the coastal park near Torra Bay , a special natural phenomenon can be observed or heard: the roaring dunes of Terracebaai : the dune sand here is composed in such a way that, with a certain wind strength and direction, it slides down the dune slope like a slab of snow a friction noise resonated by the dune body is generated that resembles an approaching aircraft squadron and can be heard over many kilometers.
