Red and rosé wines from the southern Italian province of Potenza ( Basilicata ) are sold under the name Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 2003 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

The wines with the designation may only be grown and vinified in the municipalities of Viggiano , Grumento Nova and Moliterno in the province of Potenza . The vineyards must not be over 800 m.

Manufacturing

The following types of wine are produced:

  • Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri Rosso and Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri Rosso Riserva: at least 50% Merlot and at least 30% Cabernet Sauvignon . A maximum of 20% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Basilicata region may be added.
  • Terre dell'Alta Val d'Agri Rosato: at least 50% Merlot, at least 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and at least 10% Malvasia Bianca di Basilicata . A maximum of 20% other red and white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Basilicata region may be added.
