Dodson, who is known for his straightforward, clean, soft drawing style, which is trained by artists such as Adam Hughes and Stuart Immonen , began his career as a professional comic artist in the early 1990s as a draftsman for Malibu Comics. There he created the series Mantra together with the author Mike W. Barr, which he drew for several years from 1993. In 1994, Dodson began working on the Team Titans series for DC Comics .

In 1996, Dodson drew a four-part miniseries about the superhero Storm for Marvel Comics , written by Warren Ellis . The success of these projects prompted the makers of Marvel Comics to transfer the job of draftsman for the Generation X series to Dodson in 1998 , which he oversaw until 2000 (# 38-60).

From 2000 to 2001, Dodson worked with Karl Kesel on the DC series Harley Quinn . Since 2002, Dodson worked with director Kevin Smith on the miniseries Spider-Man and the Black Cat: The Evil that Men Do, which was not released until 2006 due to numerous delays. Together with author Mark Millar , Dodson presented the controversial series Trouble in 2003 .

In 2004, Dodson took over the Marvel Knights Spider Man series with Millar . Since 2006, Dodson has been drawing the relaunched series Wonder Woman, released by DC .

Dodson's most frequent artistic partner, next to Millar, is his wife, Rachel Dodson (née Pinnock), who inks and colors most of his work.
