Terry Johnson , actually Isaiah Johnson , (born November 12, 1935 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is a rhythm and blues singer who made a name for himself primarily as a member of the Flamingos .

Life

Terry Johnson grew up in the Baltimore neighborhood of Sonny Til and Earl Hurley and sang in the church choir with Jake and Zeke Carey . In 1954 he was a founding member of the Whispers , who released a total of only two singles. Johnson was the composer, arranger and lead singer of both songs. In 1956 the band broke up again.

At the end of the year, Johnson replaced Zeke Carey with the Flamingos and was actively involved in hits such as Lovers Never Say Goodbye , I Only Have Eyes For You and Love Walked In . In 1962, Johnson fell out with Jake and Zeke Carey, who had since returned to the band. As a result, Johnson left the Flamingos the following year to found the Modern Flamingos together with Nate Nelson .

The band got a recording deal with Atco and changed their name to The Starglows. That didn't help, however: the band 's only single, Let's Be Lovers , flopped and the Starglows broke up. In 1964 he was offered a position as a producer at Motown by Smokey Robinson , which he accepted. Together with Robinson he now worked as a songwriter and produced, among other things, recordings of the Supremes , the Temptations and the Four Tops . In 1969 Johnson's solo debut single My Springtime was released , followed by Whatcha Gonna Do and the next year Stone Soul Booster . All three singles flopped, so he limited himself to producing again.

In 1974 Johnson left Motown to lead his own band, which he also called The Flamingos. In 2005 Johnson's solo debut album Still in the Pink was released on his own label TerryTree Records.
