  • 2000 celebration of the holy year.

"Jesus Christ as the only Savior of the world, yesterday, today and forever."

The emphasis was on renewing interest in the Bible , rediscovering baptism , strengthening the faith, and deepening the knowledge of the faith. (see TMA 39-43)

For the individual phases and the actual jubilee year, John Paul II laid down a theological and pastoral program. With this he wanted to emphasize the basic orientations and underline trend-setting measures. He clarified the turn of the year 2000 with regard to the birth of Jesus Christ and the history of God with man. He recorded positive and optimistic developments and underlined them as a Christian vision . The Pope emphasized the ecumenical dimension and called on the bishops and priests to integrate ecumenism (TMA 16) into their preparations. Furthermore, he presented the importance of the pastoral constitutionGaudium et spes ” in connection with the future and called for cooperation with the local and regional institutions (TMA 21).

With the key statement "Everyone is invited to do everything in his power so that the great challenge of the year 2000 (...) is not neglected" (TMA 55), the Pope emphasizes the demand that is important to him that the jubilee year 2000 should be The beginning of the church renewal and the continuation of the awakening that began after the Second Vatican Council . (TMA 18) Another focus of the preparation for the Holy Year for John Paul II was the commitment to solidarity in community and to stand up for human dignity .

Since great upheavals are recognizable in our societies, the Pope continues to write, which intervene in people's lives, he recalls the social encyclicals Rerum Novarum , Quadragesimo anno , Mater et magistra , Pacem in terris , Laborem exercens , published by him and his predecessors , Sollicitudo rei socialis , Centesimus annus , the encyclical Dominum et Vivificantem and the Apostolic Exhortation Octogesima adveniens . He reminded Christians around the world of their mandate to help shape the areas of social life. They should advocate that justice and solidarity penetrate into all areas of life and can work in the sense of the pastoral constitution “ The Church in today's world ”.

John Paul II emphasized the importance of martyrs and followed up with the call to the world's bishops' conferences to set up a “ martyrology of the 20th century”.
