Infectious pig paralysis
The Contagious swine paralysis is a viral animal disease in domestic and wild pigs . The pathogens are viruses of the genus Teschovirus , family Picornaviridae . The disease has also been known as Teschen's disease , porcine enterovirus encephalomyelitis, or poliomyelitis suum .
The disease was first described in 1929 by the Czech veterinarians Trefny and Klobouk in Český Těšín ( Eng . Teschen). It spread to Central and Eastern Europe in the 1950s , then to North America , Asia and parts of Africa . In Germany , the so-called Teschen disease was last diagnosed in 2007 .
The disease manifests itself in pronounced paralysis that begins in the hindquarters and is 20 to 100% fatal. Subacute forms ("Talfan disease") with low mortality are common.
Since July 19, 2011, the Teschen disease is no longer one of the notifiable animal diseases.
