The Teufelssee is a 2.1  hectare inflow and outflow-free, so-called Himmelsteich , with a maximum depth of almost six meters in the northern Berlin Grunewald at the end of the Teufelsseechaussee . It belongs to the district of Grunewald in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf . It is 254 meters long and up to 107 meters wide. Its west and north banks belong to the Teufelsfenn and thus to the 13.1 hectare nature reserve Postfenn and Teufelsfenn . The south bank is a swimming area. On the east bank is the Teufelssee waterworks , built in 1872/1873 , the oldest surviving waterworks in Berlin. It was shut down in 1969. Today it belongs to the nature conservation center Ökowerk Teufelssee . Northeast of the rubble of the closing World War II heaped Teufelsberg on. The Teufelssee is not to be confused with the lake of the same name in the Berlin district of Köpenick . Fishing is prohibited in Teufelssee.

The Teufelssee is of Ice Age origin. It is located in the Teufelssee – Pechsee – Barssee-Rinne, an ice age meltwater channel . The channel's lakes, all of which have no outflow, were created by embedded chunks of dead ice . The name of the lake is probably derived from a pre-Christian cult site at this point.

Protection of the Teufelssee

The Teufelssee was designated as a nature reserve by the Senate for the first time in 1960. The designation was renewed in 1986 and added to the Postfenn and Teufelsfenn nature reserve in 2007 . The lake is also part of the Grunewald fauna and flora habitat . The rare fish species bitterling occurs in the Teufelssee . The bitterling lives in an interesting symbiosis with pond clams and painter clams . The protected part of the shore is demarcated by fences and signposted. Bathing is prohibited in this part of the lake, as indicated by a chain of buoys on the water side. Groundwater is supplied to the Teufelssee to prevent the lake from lowering. The groundwater feed not only supports the water balance of the Teufelssee, but also wets the adjacent Teufelsfenn moor and preserves it as a valuable biotope.

Teufelssee as a bathing lake

The south and south-east banks of the Teufelssee and a large part of the water area do not belong to the nature reserve and are used for swimming. The lake has clear to cloudy and clean, relatively low -oxygen water. There is a mix of nudists and textiles at the lake and the lawn . There are only toilet containers and no showers. The lakeshore in the bathing area drops off quite steeply. In the middle of the lake there is a floating plastic pontoon . The water hygiene specialist group of the State Office for Health and Social Affairs Berlin (LAGeSo) monitors bathing water quality from April to September. The bathing water quality is classified as excellent. The lake has a low visibility of up to 40 cm. Improvements in the depth of view have been noticeable since 2006. Despite the presence of a toilet container, the LAGeSo assumes that faeces will enter the lake through bathers. Bacteriological and microbiological pollution can also arise from waste and the washing of animal feces (wild boar and dog feces). Dogs are prohibited at Teufelssee itself and dogs must be kept on a leash on the surrounding paths.
