Texas is a district of the community Groß Oesingen in the district of Gifhorn in Lower Saxony . It is named after the US state of Texas .

location

The village is located southwest of Groß Oesingen near the Wiehe . Ummern Airport is south of Texas . Neighboring places are Zahrenholz in the north, Groß Oesingen in the northeast and Schmarloh in the west.

history

After sheep farming had become uneconomical at the beginning of the 20th century, the heathland southwest of Zahrenholz remained largely uncultivated . After efforts by Ummern to set up settlement sites there in the early 1930s did not lead to success, the Hannoversche Siedlungsgesellschaft bought the area in 1935/36. Part of the area was in September 1944 by airbase Wesendorf used as a storage area and airfield until the beginning of April 1945, the airfield by attacking American bombers destroyed.

Memorial stone to the foundation in 1949

The Texas Settlement was founded in 1949, and the first newly built house was moved into that year. Initially, seven settlement sites were created, which was later followed by an eighth settlement site. The settlers, some of whom came from the surrounding area and some of whom were displaced , redesigned the heathland and the wasteland into a cultural landscape. In 1950, broken material from Wesendorf Air Base, whose concrete runway had been removed, was driven to Texas, thus paving the way to Zahrenholz.

On March 1, 1974, the municipality of Zahrenholz, to which Texas belonged politically as a district and also by post, was incorporated into the municipality of Groß Oesingen. In 1999, on the occasion of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the settlement, a memorial stone was erected.

A bus route operated by the Gifhorn district transport company now runs from Texas to Groß Oesingen. There are no restaurants or retail outlets in Texas.
