TextMaker is a word processing program that was developed by the Nuremberg-based company SoftMaker and is sold as part of the SoftMaker Office package . A functionally restricted free version is included in SoftMaker FreeOffice .

The current version is TextMaker 2018 and part of SoftMaker Office 2018 . The program is available for the following operating systems:

TextMaker is the only word processing program that supports all of these systems.

Earlier versions were also available for the operating systems DOS ( MS-DOS , PC-DOS , DR-DOS , FreeDOS , NW DOS ), Windows CE (TextMaker 2010), Windows Mobile (TextMaker 2010), FreeBSD (TextMaker 2006) and Sharp Zaurus (TextMaker 2002). Softmaker Office 2018 is now free for educational institutions.

General

The development of TextMaker began in 1987 as a program for MS-DOS . In addition to the low consumption of resources, one focus of Textmaker is the greatest possible compatibility with Microsoft Word . There are some additional features e.g. B.

File formats

In addition to the proprietary TextMaker format - .tmd , the program reads and writes the file formats

The formats .tmd , .doc , .docx and .odt can be used as standard formats . TextMaker can read, but not write, the .sxw formats from OpenOffice.org 1.x, WordPerfect (.wpd) and Windows Write (.wri).

TextMaker also includes an export function for the PDF and EPub format, which outputs documents without going through a PDF printer driver and with a few additional options.

Microsoft's macro and script functions ( VBA ) are not supported, but SoftMaker integrates the VBA-like scripting system BasicMaker in the Windows versions of SoftMaker Office.

Dictionaries and spell check

As of version 2010, foreign language support includes the Langenscheidt pocket dictionaries for English, French, Spanish and Italian, a thesaurus for ten languages, a spell checker for 20 languages, a user interface in 15 languages ​​and hyphenation in 33 languages. From version 2008, the Duden universal dictionary and the large Duden foreign dictionary are also part of the program.

A professional version with an integrated Duden corrector has been available since TextMaker 2012 .

Portable version

Version 2006 and later of TextMaker for Windows can also be used as portable software from a USB stick without the need for installation on the guest PC or changing system files.
