history

The Junkerei of Altenburg Castle

Today's state archive was set up in 1743 as the government archive of the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg . Predecessors of the archive can be traced back to 1603. When the Duchy of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg was founded , the archive passed into its sponsorship; When the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg was re-established, it reverted to this in 1826. In the same year, a ducal secret archive was set up next to the ducal government archive.

In the state of Thuringia , which was founded in 1920, all official archives of the Thuringian states , namely Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach , Saxe-Gotha , Saxe-Meiningen , Saxe-Altenburg, Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , Schwarzburg-Sondershausen and the People's State of Reuss , were combined in the Thuringian State Archives. During this time, the Altenburg State Archives were responsible for the state middle and sub-authorities as well as the district administration of the Altenburg district. The director of the Thuringian State Archives was initially based in the then state capital Weimar . By 1936, all official archives were brought together at the Altenburg Castle site.

After the Second World War, the State Archives were renamed the State Archives in 1951 . With the dissolution of the state of Thuringia in 1952, it was only a historical archive. In 1965 it was assigned to the newly founded Weimar State Archives and, as the Historical State Archives , was a branch of the Weimar State Archives from 1976. It was not until 1994 that the Altenburg State Archive regained its organizational independence as an independent state authority under the old name of the Thuringian State Archive Altenburg. Today it is used again as an archive for the middle and lower state authorities and subordinate authorities of the federal government, insofar as they are based in the Altenburger Land district .
