Tharparkar District is an administrative district in Pakistan in Sindh Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of Mithi .

The district has an area of ​​19,638 km² and according to the 2017 census 1,649,661 inhabitants. The population density is 84 inhabitants / km².

The district is located in the far east of Sindh Province, which is located in the southeast of Pakistan and borders India . The Thar desert dominates the landscape of the district.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017 the population grew at an annual rate of 3.14% and therefore very quickly. About 8% of the population live in urban areas and about 92% in rural areas. 882,365 men, 767,266 women and 30 transgender people live in 301,625 households , which results in a gender ratio of 115 men per 100 women and thus a common surplus of men for Pakistan. At the 1998 census, around 40% of the population were Hindus and around 60% were Muslims, making the proportion of Hindus well above the national average.

The literacy rate in the years 2014/15 among the population over 10 years of age was 38% (women: 21%, men: 54%) and thus below the average of the Sindh province of 60%.
