The The Aldermen Islands are a small group of rocky islands southeast of the Mercury Bay before the North Island of New Zealand . They are located off the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the Waikato region , 20 km east of the mouth of the Tairua River with the towns of Tairua and Pauanui .

The archipelago of The Aldermen Islands consists of 4 main islands, the total area of ​​which is less than 1 km²:

  • Hongiora
  • Middle Island
  • Ruamahuanui Island and
  • Ruamahuaiti Island

There are also several small islands

  • Nga Horo Island

The islands are a wooded nature reserve that is home to rare species such as bridge lizards. Access is only permitted with approval.

Naming

The archipelago was named on November 3, 1769 by James Cook after the Court of Aldermen (at that time the highest administrative body of the City of London ). The official spelling of the name in New Zealand's topographic maps is therefore “ The Aldermen Islands ”.
