The amphitheater

The Amphitheater (English for the amphitheater ) is a large basin in the East Antarctic Victoria Land . To the east of the Royal Society Range, it lies on the north side of Mount Dromedary and is filled with firn . The walls of the cauldron rise up to 1700  m from the bottom of the Roaring Valley .

Participants in a campaign carried out from 1960 to 1961 as part of New Zealand's Victoria University's Antarctic Expeditions gave it a descriptive name because its shape is reminiscent of an ancient amphitheater.
