action

Melody returns to her old home in Fairlands to attend the funeral of her daughter, June. But Melody does not recognize her city again, because it has almost completely disappeared under tons of sand. She also learns that she has a 10-year-old grandson, River. Melody wants to take River with her into her new life, but River struggles. He wants to hatch the eggs of the ostriches that he always fed with his mother.

River's father, Scoop, a lazy musician and the town's postman, wants Melody to leave town. A lot of arguments follow before Melody learns the truth. But when a sandstorm hits the city, everything suddenly changes.

criticism

“'The Bird Can't Fly', a strange but charming South African-Dutch collaboration, offers Barbara Hershey - who has not played a leading role since Lantana - the opportunity to show the world that she is still an incomparable actress. She thrives in the role of Melody, a South African cook who returns to her hometown to attend the funeral of her only daughter. ”Gregory Valens, The Hollywood Reporter
