history
Early planning
The EnCana Corporation announced the construction of a new headquarters in 2006. EnCana is North America's second largest natural gas producer. The first plans were originally based on two buildings. The largest building in these plans should have 60 floors or more. The Suncor Energy Center, which is located in the immediate vicinity in the city center, served as an example. Due to different opinions, it was finally decided against a building with over 70 floors and over 300 meters in height. A short time later, the official decision was announced to build a building with 58 floors and a height of 236 meters.
construction
The application for building permit was submitted under the name "The Bow", as one has an unobstructed view of the Bow River from the building . On October 12, 2006, the architects Foster and Partners presented their designs for the building.
The official start of construction was on June 13, 2007. Construction work began on both sides at the same time on 6th Avenue Street between Center Street and 1st Street. The historic hotel building in the immediate vicinity, which was built between 1929 and 1930, was demolished so that enough space could be created for the new building. The old facade was later reconstructed and integrated into the outer facade of the building. Construction was completed in 2012. The building is Calgary's tallest office building in front of the city's tallest building to date, the Suncor Energy Center's West building.
use
Encana and Cenovus share the building. Both companies want to concentrate their workforce in one location in the city. Cenovus has 2,300 offices available and the first employees moved into the new building in August 2012. Encana employees began moving in in October 2012.
