The Builders and the Butchers is a folk rock group from Portland (Oregon) , USA, founded in 2005 . Her musical style is described as a mixture of folk , rock , blues , bluegrass and soul , underlaid with dark lyrics. The band made their debut with the 2007 album The Builders And The Butchers on Bladen County Records .

The Builders and the Butchers were founded in 2005 by Ryan Sollee (vocals, guitar ), Alex Ellis ( bass ), Harvey Tumbleson ( mandolin ) and Paul Seedy ( drums ). They were initially on the streets of Portland as a funeral band . After the departure of Alex Ellis and the arrival of Brandon Hafer (drums, trumpet ) and Ray Rude ( percussions , piano ) now grown into a quintet, they renamed themselves The Builders and the Butchers. They gave their first concerts in Portland at the Mississippi Pizza and Valentines Pub. In 2007 they released their debut album, The Builders and Butchers . With their first album and their numerous live appearances, they gained more and more regional fame and were named Best New Band of 2008 by Willamette Week's in 2008 and Best Live Performers 2008 by Seattle Sound's . In 2009, the album Salvation Is a Deep Dark Well was released by Chris Funk ( The Decemberists ) . A year later The Builders and the Butchers signed a contract with the Badman Recordings label and released their third studio album there in 2011, entitled Dead Reckoning . With Western Medicine in 2013 their fourth album was released.
A special feature of The Builder and the Butchers is the somewhat unorthodox division of the drums between Ray Rude and Paul Seedy. Here one plays the kick drum and the other the snare drum .
