The Circle or The Circle USA is the American version of the British reality television telecast The Circle , which since January 1, 2020 when streaming provider Netflix is available. In addition to the British and US versions, there are two other country editions. The aim of the program is to impress the other players with your own ( fake ) profile and interactions in the fictitious social network The Circle and thus become the most popular resident.

concept

In The Circle , eight people live in an apartment complex in Salford, UK for the duration of the recording . Each participant lives in his own apartment, physical meetings between the participants do not take place. At the beginning, the participants create a profile in the eponymous fictional social network The Circle . The participant decides whether his profile represents himself, an improved version of himself or a completely different person. Communication between the participants takes place via The Circle . The participants dictate their messages and send them to the other participants in group or individual chats . In post-production , the film material is then cut in such a way that the viewer has the impression of a fluid conversation.

The participants evaluate each other regularly so that a ranking is created. The participants in the first two places become so-called influencers . They decide which of their teammates is blocked and has to leave the show. Blocked players are excluded directly from the network, but have the opportunity to meet another player in person. Afterwards, the other players are shown a video message from the blocked player. In this, the blocked player reveals whether his profile was a fake profile. The blocked players are replaced by a new player in the first episodes. In the final episode, players rank one last time. The player in first place wins the show and receives $ 100,000 in prize money.

reception

In the press, comparisons are made to the well-known formats Big Brother and the jungle camp , but also to the episode Crashed on the British television series Black Mirror . However, the FAZ particularly emphasizes the respectful treatment of the candidates, because the program is "not about plunging people into emotional distress with mind games".
