The Coker Family was an American country band whose members came from the Al Coker family.

Career

Beginnings

Al Coker was born Alvis Coker in Conway , Arkansas , but moved to Bakersfield , California in 1937 . There he married Geraldine Coker, with whom he had a daughter Alvadean (* 1938) and a son "Sandy" Alvis jr. (* 1940) had. Son Alvis won a fiddle competition in the early 1950s, and a year later he was accompanied by his father and sister in his performances. The Coker Family was born.

Career

Shortly thereafter, mother Geraldine ( bass ) and her sister Linda ( piano ) joined the group. Alvis and Alvadean made their first recording with Abbott Records in 1954 with We're Gonna Bop . The siblings became members of the Town Hall Party , the West Coast's most famous television show, and performed alongside the Collins Kids . The Coker Family got a record deal with Decca Records . As Al Coker and the Coker Family , the song Don't Go Baby (Don't Go) was recorded in Nashville in July 1956 . Alvis and Alvadean also released some records at Decca. In the following years Alvadean and Alvis made further solo recordings. They were inducted into the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in 1998 and 1992, respectively.
