The Daily

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Daily was an online daily newspaper published by Rupert Murdoch ( News Corporation ). It was published electronically via the iPad without the production of a paper edition and was distributed as paid content . It was the first online newspaper that was specially developed for the iPad and that was only circulated on tablet computers . The Daily has been available for tablets with the Android operating system since the second quarter of 2011 .

The project, which employed about 120 journalists, was invested $ 30 million prior to its inception date. The first issue was originally due to appear on January 19, 2011. In mid-January 2011 it became known that the release date would be delayed by a few weeks due to a missing subscription function in Apple's App Store . This subscription worked like a push service . Rupert Murdoch and Apple Vice President Eddy Cue presented The Daily on February 2, 2011 in New York . The publisher charged 14 US cents for a single edition of the online newspaper. A subscription was either $ 99 per week or $ 39.99 for a year. After payment, the user is entitled to redistribute individual articles free of charge via email , Facebook or Twitter . Shortly after the release of the tablet edition created a blogger in Web an index page that collected these links to Web content and archived.

According to Murdoch, The Daily cost about $ 500,000 a week to run. It was intended to align the medium “between tabloid and quality journalism”, but neither foreign branches nor an office in Washington were planned. Jesse Angelo , who previously worked for the tabloid New York Post , was in charge of the project .

The publication was discontinued on December 15, 2012. This was due to the lack of profitability caused by a combination of insufficient advertising partners and subscriptions .
