The Daniel Bermes Boulevard Brewery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Daniel Bermes Boulevard Brewery was a brewery in Union Hill , now Union City . The brewery was the largest in Hudson County in its day .

history

The brewery was officially founded in 1851, according to other sources in 1855, by the German emigrant Daniel Bermes from Bechenheim in Rheinhessen .

Bermes was born on January 18, 1824 in Bechenheim. He was the son of the then mayor Karl Bermes, who was also a beer brewer. After Daniel Bermes emigrated to America in 1848 or 1852, he worked for several years in various breweries in New York, including the Kirchhof Brewery.

After these years of apprenticeship, he went into business for himself with the Boulevard Brewery named after him. The initial production of his brewery was seven barrels a day. After the American Civil War , the brewery expanded. The use of steam engines, the acquisition of a fountain built with a bed of 120 gallons of water (454 liters) per minute and repeated structural expansions, the company continued to grow. The ice machines in the cold store had a production capacity of 50 to 74 tons. In 1893 the premises of "The Daniel Bermes Boulevard Brewery" took up an entire block with 16.8 hectares.

Bermes died on June 18, 1898, leaving behind a personal fortune of approximately five million dollars. His wife Dorothea took over the business and was able to double the company value from two to four million dollars. She was considered one of the richest women in the state of New Jersey .
