TERA (usually TERA Online abbreviated) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game ( massively multiplayer online role-playing game - MMORPG) from Bluehole Studio . It was released on January 25, 2011 in South Korea and on July 29, 2011 in Japan. It was released in North America on May 1, 2012 and in Europe on May 3, 2012.

Gameplay

TERA Online offers some typical MMORPG content like quests , crafts, dungeons and PVP . In battles, the player must actively aim the crosshair at the enemy himself, instead of the enemy being attacked automatically after selecting the enemy.

Races and classes

There is only one playable faction in which the player can choose one of the following races. These would be the humans, castanics, baraka, high elves, Aman, Elin and the animal-like Popori. Both sexes exist of every race, with the exception of the Baraka, Elin and Popori, however the Elin represent to a certain extent the female counterpart to the Popori. The damage-causing classes (DD) are the magician, the destroyer, the warrior , the Archer, the Berserker, the Blade Dancer (Elin only), the Ninja (Elin only), and the Arcane Engineer (female Castanic and High Elves only). The protector classes (tanks) are the lancer and the warrior. There are also two supporting classes (healers), the priest and the mystic. The newest class, the Sturmfurie or Sturmfaust (female / male, humans only), serves as a tank that simultaneously causes a lot of damage.

production

The development costs of around 32 million euros by winter 2010 make it the third most expensive online role-playing game to date. The most expensive online role-playing game is Star Wars: The Old Republic with around 200 million euros, followed by RIFT with around 50 million euros in production costs. The development costs of World of Warcraft were 28 million euros and Aion cost the developers 16 million euros.

In the meantime, TERA has also been localized for other languages. The Russian game version is currently in a beta test phase and has already received praise from Russian game media for the choice of font and the quality of the translation in the areas of the first game levels.

history

TERA was published in Europe on May 3, 2012 in German, English and French, a Korean and Japanese version had already been published in 2011. From the start, however, the number of players remained below expectations. In the summer of 2011, it was announced that the game's revenues in Korea were below the manufacturer's expectations. Due to the small population, the number of game servers for Korea has been reduced from 37 to 15. At the turn of the year from 2011 to 2012, the Japanese servers were merged to a third of the original number. Servers were also gradually merged in the other regions: In North America the game was reduced from 11 to 3 servers on September 18, 2012, and finally on November 20, 2012 in Europe, which means that only one PvE server per language and one international PvP Server exists. After these measures did not lead to the desired success, the game was initially converted to a free-to-play model in Korea at the end of 2012 ; the corresponding conversion took place in Europe on February 4, 2013. In Korea, the changeover resulted in a three-fold increase in the number of players within a few weeks compared to the old pay-to-play model. The first monthly statistics from Tera Europe show that over half a million new players have registered with Tera Europe since the Free2Play conversion.

Flame crucible

With the free-to-play model, a new dungeon has also been integrated into the game, the flame pot. It should bring a completely new instance experience with it. A leaderboard will recognize the best groups and players who move up to the top ranks can look forward to special rewards. The flame crucible will be available in different levels of difficulty.

Fate of Arun

On December 12, 2014, Tera Rising received a comprehensive update with Fate of Arun, which increased the previous maximum level from 60 to 65 and included new endgame content such as instances and a new arena. With the update, a new, northern part of the continent of Arun became accessible to players and the story of the previous game was continued. In addition, the name changed from TERA: Rising to TERA: Fate of Arun.
