The Field Mice were a British indie rock band from London that existed between 1987 and 1991. They count as representatives of twee pop and released their records on the influential independent label Sarah Records .

history

The singer and guitarist Robert Wratten and bassist Michael Hiscock originally founded The Field Mice as a duo in 1987, the other band members only joined later. Their first single Emma's House , which is only accompanied by a drum computer, was released in 1988. In the following years they became the flagship of their record company Sarah Records and followed their release strategy with singles, EPs and two mini LPs. After the British press initially disparagingly referred to the group as twee pop, they have now received better reviews. The compilation Costal was released in August 1991, followed by For Keeps two months later, the band's first and last full-length album. Like the mini LPs, it did not contain any of the songs released as single. After a brawl during a concert in Glasgow in November 1991, the band broke up and a final farewell concert was given in London.

In 1993 Robert Wratten, Annemarie Davies and Mark Dobson formed the Northern Picture Library , which broke up in 1995. Wratten then founded the Trembling Blue Stars together with Beth Arzy .

style

The Field Mice style was called "pure, perfect pop" with influences from indie dance, acid house , dream pop and shoegazing , all styles of music emerging in the late 80s.

Her song Missing the moon , reminiscent of New Order , was listed in the top 200 of the 1990s by Pitchfork . Saint Etienne's second single from 1990 was a cover of Let's Kiss and Make Up from the Field Mice album Snowball .
