The flock

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Flock (Eng. The swarm , the herd ) was an American rock band , which is often compared to groups like Chicago , Colosseum or Blood, Sweat & Tears . Their complex music mixed rock , jazz , blues and other styles. They used rather unusual instruments for rock music, such as the saxophone and electrically amplified violin. John Mayall called them "the best American band" he had ever heard.

Band history

The Flock was founded in 1965 by Rick Canoff (vocals, saxophone) and Fred Glickstein (vocals, guitar, keyboards). Both had previously played together in a band called The Exclusives . They had recorded several singles with various accompanying musicians.

In 1969 the group had expanded to a septet , with Jerry Goodman (violin), Jerry Smith (bass), Ron Karpman (drums), John Gerber (saxophone, flute, banjo) and Tom Webb (saxophone, flute) as additional members. That year her widely acclaimed, but commercially disappointing, debut album "The Flock" was released .

In 1970 The Flock performed at the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music with Led Zeppelin, among others . In 1970 the second album "Dinosaur Swamps" was released , which fell short of expectations.

In 1971, while working on the third album "Flock Rock" , the group broke up; the album remained unfinished and was not released. Jerry Goodman appeared on John McLaughlin's album "My Goal's Beyond" and became a founding member of his fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra .

In 1973 it was reorganized as a quintet with violinist Mike Zydowsky, who recorded the album "Inside Out" and went on tour. In 2004 a live album with recordings from the European tour in 1973 was released.
