The Frog, the Dog, and the Devil is a 1986 New Zealand animated short film directed by Bob Stenhouse .

action

The Mackenzie in New Zealand on Friday, September 13, 1902: A drinker empties his bottle of whiskey in front of a pub and secretly fills it with water in a basin. He accidentally locks a frog in the bottle. In the bar he asks for a bottle of whiskey, which he stows in his pocket. Since he pretends to have no money, he returns the bottle to the host - it's the water bottle with the frog. He rides off with the dog by his side and empties the whiskey bottle. Human shapes now seem to be forming in a pond, the man is plagued by hallucinations and his horse runs away with him. The dog seems to have eyes of fire and a rat in an animal skull now terrifies the drinker. He rides quickly back to the bar, where this time he pays for a new bottle of whiskey. He promptly receives his own water bottle back. When he pours himself a glass, he pours the frog into the glass, which scares him again, pulls himself out of the glass and hops wet outside.

production

The Frog, the Dog, and the Devil was inspired by the song The Devil's Daughter by Ernie Slow and refers to New Zealand as the "nation of drinkers", as it was called in 1838 in the House of Lords . The characters in the film are voiced by Grant Tilly .

Awards

At the Ottawa International Animation Festival Bob Stenhouse was awarded the 1986 Grand Prix.

The Frog, the Dog, and the Devil was nominated in 1987 for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”, but could not prevail against Een Griekse tragedie . It was the first New Zealand animated short film to be nominated for an Oscar.
