The Hole is an American animated short film directed by John Hubley in 1962.

action

Two construction workers, voiced by Dizzy Gillespie and George Mathews , are working in a hole underground on a construction site. Both talk. Gillespie says that if his wife died now, she would receive a prescribed telegram of money from the Western Union every year on her birthday . Thoughts wander on to the last wash, when Gillespie dropped a glass and his wife accused him of not concentrating - Mathews says he didn't want to wash up anyway and therefore dropped the glass.

Political arguments ensue: is Gillespie in government because the Constitution says We the Inhabitants of the United States ? A brief argument about the driver's license and dancing follows - Mathews likes to dance the foxtrot and waltz . Both fear that at some point a heavy plate lifted by the crane could fall down into the hole. What follows is a consideration of accidents and Mathew's thesis that 99% of all accidents happen because people want to. They get into an argument about what would happen if a piece of Venus fell to Earth and the radar didn't make it clear what was attacking - whether a nuclear war broke out?

Gillespie gives an example of power: if he was walking around with a gun in his pocket and a tall man stepped on his foot, he would provoke him despite an apology. If he didn't have a gun, he would just move on without waiting for an apology. Mathews orders coffee and the talk turns to being overweight. What if someone who was overweight was at the control point that could retrieve the nuclear missiles that had been fired and had a heart attack or passed out before he could press the retrieve button because of his weight?

In the middle of the argument, there is a loud bang as a heavy object falls from the crane plate and hits the ground. Both men briefly come to the surface and then return to the hole.

production

The Hole was created on the basis of an improvised dialogue between Dizzy Gillespie and actor George Mathews . The dialogues are interrupted by hammer drill noises and partly structured.

John and Faith Hubley were known for their cartoons, which were created around impromptu dialogue. In 1960 they had already received an Oscar for Moonbird , based on an improvised dialogue between their sons .

The Hole was animated by Bill Littlejohn and Gary Mooney .

Awards

The Hole won in 1963 the Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ". In 2013 the film was entered into the National Film Registry .
