Roy Wayne Farris (born January 25, 1953 in Bolivar Tennessee ), better known by his ring name (The) Honky Tonk Man , is a former American wrestler . He competed for both WWF and WCW . Farris is also the WWF Intercontinental Champion with the longest reign in WWE history for 454 days .
Career
Beginnings (1977–1986)
Before his wrestling career, Farris worked as a football coach at a high school. He eventually got into wrestling through a few friends and his cousin Jerry Lawler . Farris began his wrestling career in 1977 at the regional level and then formed with Jerry Latham the tag team The Blonde Bombers in the AWA . Latham would later become known as the Moondog Spot . His first major success came in 1986 when he won the North American Heavyweight title in Stu Hart's Promotion Stampede Wrestling .
World Wrestling Federation (1986-1991)
In the same year Farris joined the WWF and initially appeared as Face . He got a gimmick that was based on Elvis Presley's behavior and appearance . Nevertheless, or precisely because of the unheard-of imitation of the original, the fans reacted with rejection. Without further ado, Farris was turned into a heel and Jimmy Hart was put at his side as manager. Hart was presented as Colonel Jimmy Hart , based on "Colonel" Tom Parker .
He feuded in the following years, especially with Jake Roberts , against whom he was finally able to win at Wrestlemania III. Jake Roberts and Farris have had a strained relationship since that time, as Roberts claims that Farris actually injured him in a blow and thus caused him to become addicted to painkillers. Farris, however, denies this and declares Roberts to be a liar.
On June 2, 1987, Farris was allowed to win the WWF Intercontinental Champion title from Ricky Steamboat in Buffalo, New York . A new feud with Randy Savage began and on November 26, 1987, the two wrestlers and their teams played the very first Survivor Series match ever. Savage's team stayed victorious after Farris was counted out. The two then met again individually, but Savage was not to win the title.
After it became clear that Brutus Beefcake would be his next opponent in the feud, this plan was rejected again in favor of a new potential star. Therefore, at the first Summer Slam in 1988, the Ultimate Warrior won the title of Farris in a 30-second match. This brought the longest Intercontinental title reign in WWE history to an end.
After brief further banter with the Ultimate Warrior and Jimmy Snuka , Farris formed a tag team called Rhythm n 'Blues with Greg Valentine and competed more or less in the lower match card, but also occasionally against the then tag team champions, the Hart Foundation . He worked briefly as a co-commentator in the early 1990s, but left the WWF completely in 1991.
World Championship Wrestling (guest appearances 1994)
In 1994 Farris worked briefly for World Championship Wrestling and was supposed to start a feud against Johnny B. Badd for the television title . But because of a dispute with management, he was fired and it never came about.
World Wrestling Entertainment (1997–1998, 2001 & 2008)
After a brief engagement in the American Wrestling Federation , he returned to the WWF as manager of Billy Gunn , who started as a rockabilly . However, the Gunns Gimmick flopped if his services were no longer needed. 2001 he made a guest appearance in the Royal Rumble Match, but was eliminated by Kane.
In an internet poll on wwe.com , he was voted Greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time . It was under this title that he was announced frequently at the WWE, in particular by his cousin, ring commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler . He made a guest appearance at the Cyber Sunday 2008 event when he was voted by fans to face Santino Marella for the WWE Intercontinental Championship .
