The I-Land is an American thriller - Miniseries streaming service Netflix . The series combines motifs from a Robinsonade with science fiction elements.
action
The I-Land tells the story of ten strangers who wake up without a memory on the beach of a deserted tropical island. The series is initially about the everyday struggle for survival and rivalries between the stranded. In the course of the action, the island turns out to be a virtual reality . The stranded are actually inmates in a prison and the island is an experiment to see if the prisoners are ready to be reintegrated into society.
The background story of the stranded people is explained in flashbacks . Gabriela Chase, who at times manages to leave the virtual island, turns out to be innocent in the end and is released from prison.
Trivia
The prison's sociologist, Dr. Defoe, has the same name as the author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe. This can be interpreted as an allusion to the genre of the Robinsonad - as represented by The I-Land.
