The Job Lot - Das Jobcenter is a British sitcom ( Britcom ) from 2013 that is about the employees at a job center in the West Midlands (at a fictional Brownall location). The series was produced by Hannah Pescod and written by Claire Downes , Stuart Lane and Ian Jarvis . ITV showed the first season; the second and third seasons were broadcast by ITV2.
Russell Tovey announced in December 2016 that there would be no fourth season for the time being and the series would not continue.
In Germany, the first broadcast took place in April 2017 on the ARD digital channel One , also in the original English version on funk .
action
The series focuses on the employees of a job center in the fictional town of Brownall in the West Midlands. The main problems in the job center include its clients, who often cannot be placed. In addition, they deal primarily with their relationships with one another and current events, such as a visit from a high-ranking politician or the reduction of placement costs. Your ventures often lead to disasters. For example, an angry, unemployed country singer takes director Trish hostage in one episode.
characters
Patricia "Trish" Collingwood
Patricia Collingwood, around forty years old, called “Trish” by her staff, is the neurotic manager of the job center. What is particularly striking is her constant smile, with which she tries to master every situation.
As a manager, she is busy with a wide variety of tasks, which include looking after employees and the job center as well as organizing celebrations. She always has new ideas, but most of them are unsuccessful (for example a whirlpool in the entrance area) to give the job center new impetus. Often these end in disaster. From the second season she will be supported by her new deputy, Nathalie Mason, who she also regards as a friend. In doing so, the two rely on their employees, but are often slowed down in many situations by the employee Angela, whom they try to avoid as much as possible.
Trish is also divorced and has no children, but begins an affair with the younger Tom, Karl's roommate, which Trish ends. After some misunderstandings with Karl, her heartfelt desire to have children, which should be made possible by Karl's sperm donation, is no longer discussed.
Karl Lyndhust
The romantically inclined advisor Karl mostly dreams of a better life. He originally studied art history. With daring actions, which are often unsuccessful, he tries to jump over his shadow. Karl and Ash break into the job center at night to steal an evaluation sheet with a bad rating about Ash. In doing so, however, they happen to be surprised and knocked down by Trish.
As a job broker, he is welcome, but the placement is not fully successful. It is more likely to arouse interest in women. His great love, Trish's deputy Nathalie, does not enter into a relationship with him at first, as she considers a relationship at work to be unpleasant. Karl lives with Tom in a shared apartment until he moves in the third season and Nathalie moves in with him. His marriage proposal fails after he steals a ring.
Nathalie Mason
At the beginning of the second season, 25-year-old Nathalie moves to Brownall's job center as Trish's deputy. As a friend and advisor, Nathalie Trish is actively at your side to implement common goals as well as to solve problems and to promote the job center innovatively. Angela is also a thorn in her side.
Nathalie previously worked as a HR manager. Nathalie is single at first, until after a temporary reluctance she starts a relationship with Karl. She also lends Karl a hand and supports him. For example, she tries with Brioney to bring a ring back to a jeweler that Karl stole for her. However, this company fails.
Angela Bromford
Angela is a lousy, cocky and cold-hearted consultant in the job center. She has been the only employee there since it opened 25 years ago. Her trademarks include strict glasses, a blue cardigan and a small barrette in her otherwise embarrassingly combed hair.
Angela always insists on her right. She knows all kinds of laws extremely well and has a very good placement record, but is just as tough when it comes to placing the unemployed or leaving them cold to look for a job on their own. So she callously cuts aid in one episode and notes them with smileys in a weekly schedule.
She is usually unfriendly and dismissive to her colleagues and clients, but in exciting situations she also wants recognition and attention. She pursues several side activities in the job center. As a fire protection officer, for example, she triggers a strike because she demands more expenditure on fire protection and Trish and Nathalie are canceling the Christmas party as a consequence.
In her private life, Angela loves cats. She once hides a pregnant cat in a drawer on her desk in the job center and finally gives birth in Bryony's stroller. In addition to her main job in the job center, she seems to live on the social benefits of her (actually deceased) mother, which is clarified in the last episode by her former supervisor Maggy. Angela still thinks of the happy, funny person with pigtails that Angela is said to have been. Maggy dies of a heart attack in the same episode after Angela seems to have withheld her pills.
Janette Hodgkins and Paul Franks
Janette and Paul, as securities, are responsible for security in the job center. In addition to this, their tasks also include receiving jobseekers and unlocking / locking the center. Paul is married, his wife leaves him over the course of the series, and he temporarily moves to his trailer in the backyard. Janette has a helpful manner and likes to give a helping hand. For example, she brings Paul food when he is having a conversation with Trish in the trailer and she hides in bed out of fear, which Janette interprets as wrong.
When an unemployed country singer is taken hostage, Janette and Paul miss their only chance to prove themselves as security: They both play tennis in the backyard.
George Dhot
George also works as an employee in the job center. His main area of activity is fraud involving social benefits, which he tries to solve using unusual means, such as night vision devices or electric batons.
Danielle Fisher
Adviser Danielle, who recently became a mother, is returning to work with the first episode of the series, which she is very happy about. With Karl, she developed a kind of relationship that was not discussed any further due to her departure without comment at the beginning of the second season.
Ash
Ash is introduced as the new District Psychologist in season three. He is friendly and educated. He also tries to support his employees psychologically and to defuse situations. He never really succeeds in doing this. Often times he becomes anxious himself or makes matters much worse, for example when Trish is taken hostage.
Bryony West
The young Bryony is one of the long-term clients in the job center and is mainly looked after by Karl. Her mother and grandmother (who look amazingly similar to her) also visit the job center. She can usually not accept the jobs offered; she justifies this with various excuses. Your own, often unrealistic job ideas are also doomed to failure. Her idea of appearing in a striptease bar can be cited here, which is initially supported by Nathalie and Trish with dance exercises, but ultimately not pursued any further.
Charisma
ITV broadcast the series for the first time on April 29, 2013 in the evening program together with the newly produced series Vicious . The Job Lot had a market share of 20.6% with 4.7 million viewers. However, The Job Lot's viewership dropped to less than two million in June 2013. The next steps for both series remained uncertain, because Vicious also lost market share. In August 2013 it was announced that a second season had been commissioned for both series. At the same time, the relocation of The Job Lot to the ITV2 themed channel was announced.
The series was from 20 April 2017 the television station One erstausgestrahlt Thursdays in German. Since then the series has been repeated every now and then.
reception
The Job Lot has been compared to the Vicious series by British daily newspapers based on co-broadcast . In The Guardian , film critic Sam Wollaston prefers the series around the job center that it is “better to do something that feels like ten years ago instead of twenty,” as he believes Vicious . Sarah Hadland as Trish and Russell Tovey as Karl would make "nice representations". The renouncement of canned laughter is "certainly a relief".
Keith Watson from Metro , however, sees “the daily grinding up of everyday life in a job center” as a “tough battle”. He regrets the "lack of credibility" and "the feeling the characters have nowhere to go" despite the star cast of Tovey and Hadland. With the start of the second season, Will Dean of The Independent would rate the series as "pretty rewarding" if it weren't too "sitcom-like," and explains this using the sexual innuendo of an episode.
On the German website leinwandreporter.com , the series is described as a “charming, crazy insider tip”, which can also compete with comedy series like Stromberg . When asked about the cast, Jo Enright is also highlighted as Angela , who "so dryly [...] dominates every scene". In addition, a "partially amusing topic" was praised in its implementation.
Cast and dubbing
The German dubbing was created under the dialogue direction by Michaela Kametz and Klaus Terhoeven by the dubbing company artaudio GmbH in Cologne .
