The Kirk is a monument in Mason City ( Iowa ). The 1903 residential complex has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982 .

history

The apartment building was built in 1903. The eponymous builder, Horace P. Kirk, was with his three brothers an established businessman in Mason City since the end of the Civil War . He had opened a photo gallery in 1867 and founded the Commercial Exchange Bank in 1880 , of which he became the first president. In 1892 he had the HP Kirk Building built, which served the wholesale trade and offered office space. In 1902 the Kirkland Flats followed , a four-story apartment building. Both houses were destroyed by fire in September 1902. The Kirk was the first luxury apartment block in Mason.

The Kirk was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 12, 1982 . It is also the Contributing Property of the Mason City Downtown Historic District .

The Kirk is three stories high and has an eclectic design that combines horizontal and vertical style elements. The approximately square base is 31.70 mx 32 m  .
