The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis is the first song from the album of the same name from 1974. The song was released as a single in the USA. It wasn't awarded, but it was played a lot on American FM radio stations.

background

Like other songs on the album, the music and lyrics in The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway are inspired by 1960s soul songs. The song ends with the words "They say the neon lights are always bright on Broadway. They say there is always magic in the air." The lyrics are taken from the Drifters song On Broadway from 1963.

The bass playing of the song by Mike Rutherford has been described as having "aggressive energy" that matches the angry character Rael of the concept album.

After Gabriel's departure, the band often played the song with Phil Collins as the vocalist during the early tours, usually moving to the closing section of The Musical Box . A live version was released on Seconds Out in 1977 .

Cover version

Peter Gabriel also played the song as an encore in 1978. Steve Hackett added the song to the setlist during the 2012 Genesis Revisited II tour.

Progressive rock band The Flower Kings featured the song on their first live album Alive on Planet Earth . Rock guitarist Paul Gilbert covered the song on his 2003 solo album Gilbert Hotel .
