The Midnight is a synthwave band from Los Angeles , which consists of the duo Tyler Lyle and Tim McEwan.

history

Georgia-born singer and songwriter Tyler Lyle, who comes from a folk music family, met Danish producer and songwriter Tim McEwan in Los Angeles in 2012. Together the two founded The Midnight - inspired by the film Drive and its songs - in the same year.

The central theme of their music is the Japanese term “ mono no aware ” ( Japanese 物 の 哀 れ ), which describes a wistful, sometimes melancholy reminiscence of the carefree moments of childhood and youth; this in the knowledge of the knowledge that time is fleeting and unstoppable. As part of the Synthwave genre in the interpretation from 2000 and the so-called "New Retro Wave" - which is particularly characterized by the desire to make melodies and film and video game soundtracks of the 1980s revived - The Midnight combined retrofuturistisch elements of synth pop and House with the use of e-drums and characteristic saxophone solos. Tim McEwan described the duo's activity in the past as "songwriting that is done through the prism of nostalgia".

Two years after its inception, The Midnight released their first album Days of Thunder in 2014 . After the album Endless Summer , released in 2016 , which included a duet with the US singer Nikki Flores, the album Nocturnal followed in 2017 . The latter not only rose to number 17 on the Billboard Dance / Electronic Charts, it also stayed at the bestseller position of the online music service Bandcamp for several weeks . This album also included a duet with Nikki Flores, as well as a track that was created in collaboration with Synthwave artist Timecop1983. On July 14, 2017, the duo held their first live show; within a short time they managed to hold larger shows with similar artists from the genre. Another album, Kids , was released in September 2018 ; Lyle had become a father himself by this time.

After live performances in 2017 and a North American tour in 2018, The Midnight announced further performances in America and Europe in 2019 - including performances in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Vienna and Zurich.
