The Nelson Mail is a daily regional newspaper in New Zealand . Its catchment area is in the northern part of the South Island with the editorial office in Nelson .

history

The Nelson Mail in 1866 by the printer and newspaper publisher Robert Lucas under the name The Nelson Evening Mail founded and the first time on March 5, 1966 as the first appearing daily newspaper of Nelson issued. Lucas' previous newspapers, The Nelson Advertiser (1860) and The Nelson Intelligence (1862), no longer existed at this point.

Two competing daily newspapers at the time, The Examiner (1842–1873) and The Colonist (1857–1921) did not survive the Nelson Evening Mail . From 1921 the Evening Mail was the city's only daily newspaper. It was owned by the Lucas family from its inception until it was sold to Independent Newspapers Limited (INL) in 1993 .

The Independent Newspapers changed the name of the newspaper to " The Nelson Mail " in June 1995 and sold it to the Australian Fairfax Media group in 2003, along with all other publications it owned .
